New Era for Glenrowan as Hub Opens
Published on 16 September 2023
A new chapter in Glenrowan’s history begins with the official opening of the Ned Kelly Discovery Hub—an innovative visitor experience that brings the story of Ned Kelly and the infamous siege to life in a contemporary and engaging way.
Located in the heart of Glenrowan, the Hub is a key feature of the Glenrowan Heritage Project and was officially opened by the Hon. Jaclyn Symes, Victorian Attorney-General and Member for Northern Victoria.
Through immersive storytelling, striking architecture and the use of interactive technology, the Ned Kelly Discovery Hub invites visitors to explore one of Australia’s most complex and debated historical figures. Inside, visitors will find first-hand accounts, layered narratives and diverse perspectives on the events that unfolded at Glenrowan. Outside, a raised viewing platform provides sweeping views of the historic siege site.
“This is a place to discover, immerse, reflect and connect,” said Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees. “The Ned Kelly Discovery Hub doesn’t just tell a story—it invites you into it. It helps us understand how local stories are part of a larger national narrative.”
Chief Executive Officer Brendan McGrath said the Hub delivers on a long-held vision for the site.
“We wanted to create a contemporary experience that not only shares Glenrowan’s story but does so in a way that feels relevant and compelling,” he said. “The Hub uses technology and thoughtful interpretation to honour the past while inspiring the future.”
The Hub is designed as a place of learning and exploration, and serves as a gateway to the wider region—encouraging visitors to discover the many cultural landmarks, natural attractions and historic sites across the Rural City of Wangaratta.
The Ned Kelly Discovery Hub opens to the public on Saturday 16 September 2023.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a curious traveller or visiting with family, the Hub offers a unique and thought-provoking experience for all.
